Hiring a Contractor - hoo boy

Because my porch roofs looked like this:

And because, in my dotage, I find myself less and less interested in heights...this morning before going to work I did something that totally goes against the grain of what I do (with my house that is!).  I hired a contractor.  In an earlier post I bemoaned the fact that it's pretty hard to find a contractor you're comfortable with, and getting one to actually show up for an estimate.  Luckily by word-of-mouth I found one that at least said all the right things.  Here's how it went...
I had asked a couple contractors I saw in the neighborhood to give me an estimate on how much to repair or replace the roofs on my front and back porch, a bump out on one side of the house, and the gable skirts on the front and back.  One guy came by, and without getting up on the roof at all, said he could replace the porch roofs with asphalt shingles, for about $2000.  Hmm, didn't sound too awfully I asked him to write up a contract and…

Fall Plantings!

Work has me really tied up right now.  There's still a few projects that need to get done before the snow flies, but they are projects that'll take more than a couple hours on a Saturday afternoon, so...I'm trying to get some of the smaller "optional" projects done.  This morning I went to Marshall's to get a new pair of slippers...yep, I actually blogged that - slippers.  Well, I didn't find any that I liked, but on the way home I passed our favorite nursery.  Just as I was blowing by I saw a huge sign - "Clearance on all Nursery Items."

Briefly, the back story:  When we bought our house many years ago now, there were three HUGE old maples trees in the Devil's Strip between the sidewalk and the road.  They were beautiful, but very old, weak and diseased.  As much as I hated to do it - I had the city take them down.  For the past several years we thought and debated about putting in some new trees.  And each year, we'd say - "yeah! …

Design Ideas - Just Killin' Time

Hotel living for another week.  I don't mind it - love my job, but there's always project at home on my mind.  So, to assuage my anxiety, I thought I'd post some pictures I've found elsewhere of ideas I like.  Unfortunately I'm not sure where all these came from, but I will give credit for those I do.  If, per chance, you are reading this and one of the pictures belongs to you - please let me know and I will remedy the situation.  Off we go!

I see these pictures on blogs in my Google Reader on my phone.  To remind myself of why I saved the pics, I use "PicSay" app to add notes.  So, some ideas, basically just killin' time in the hotel room!

Retro Project - Umbrella Stand

So 173 made it through Hurricane Irene pretty much unscathed.  I'm sorry to say that communities all around where we live have not fared as well.  Two small towns are completely gone.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to those affected - here and everywhere.
I mentioned a couple weeks ago that I was looking forward to getting estimates for replacing the porch roofs. Well, funny thing (not funny in a "ha ha" way) about hurricanes is that they come with lots of wind.  Gee, whoda thunk it?  Wind + shingle roofs = roofing contractors over-booked!  So the struggle continues.  I have a few projects bumping around in my mind, but for now - I'm at a bit of a stand-still.  Time for another Retro Project!
After finishing the back porch, it was time to furnish and decorate it.  It's not a huge porch so we didn't want to put too much stuff out there.  It's also a pretty simple porch, so we didn't want a lot of bling or fancy stuff.  One thing always did want thou…
