Talk About the Simplest of Designs!
A scrap of 2x4, a few drilled holes, and one small workshop annoyance finally has a solution.
Fair warning! This is not an exciting post. It's not an elaborate, intricate, complicated or grand project - not at all. As a matter-of-fact, this is one of the simplest "projects" heretofore posted at 173!
But that's one of the things I've come to enjoy about puttering around the workshop. Not everything has to become a piece of furniture or take three weekends to finish. Sometimes the best little projects start with something that's been mildly annoying you, a scrap of wood that's too good to throw away, and twenty minutes with nothing better to do.
Come to think of it, this little ditty utilized a couple other scrap wood projects, and this one is made from the little length of 2x4 below:
A Small Workshop Problem
The story is - last year my dad gave me his AMT Model 4601 scroll saw...
I've always liked having some of Dad's tools find their way into my workshop. There's something satisfying about putting a tool back to work rather than letting it sit unused, and this old AMT has settled in quite nicely here at 173. Along with the saw, though, came enough loose blades to create a new problem: keeping track of the darn things.
So, today being so incredibly hot and humid outside (and I don't like either), I thought I would take a few minutes to make some kind of storage for them.
Making the Blade Storage Block
After cutting a small piece to 2x4 to length, I bored a few holes to about 3/8 of an inch from the bottom. Oh, and in this picture you can see a couple of those scrap wood gadgets I made before...
From there, I just stained it with Minwax Gunstock stain...
Applied a few coats of amber shellac...
And voila! Storage for the blades!
Simple, yet effective! Like I said - not exciting, not at all! But it's fun finding little things to do with scrap wood!
Now THIS is a shop project I can get behind. Scrap two-by-four, a few holes, twenty minutes, done. No plans, no trip to Lowe's, and nobody on YouTube explaining why I need $900 worth of tools first.You had scroll saw blades. You kept losing them. You drilled holes.
