The Beagle vs. the Garden Fence

House 173 Shorts

Bruegger 1, String 0

Our first garden fence was one piece of string. Unfortunately, Bruegger the beagle had his own ideas about what constituted a boundary.

Around 1998, we decided the little vegetable garden at House 173 needed a fence.
So we installed one.

It was a string.

One string, stretched between a few stakes around the garden. Looking back, I'm not entirely sure what we expected the string to accomplish, but apparently we believed it possessed some sort of authority.

Bruegger didn't share this belief.

He was our first beagle, and we tried, maybe twice, to “train” him that the string represented a boundary.

Bruegger looked at the string.

Bruegger looked at the garden.

And Bruegger stepped right over it.

The original garden, circa 1999. Yes, that string running around it really was the fence.

Eventually we accepted that our sophisticated single-string security system had been compromised.

Up went stakes and chicken wire.

The next iteration. Notice considerably more fence.

That worked better.

We didn't know very much about beagles back then. Bruegger was our first, and over the years he taught us quite a bit about them.

We learned quickly.

Bruegger...

Not so much.

Hey, thanks for stopping by - see ya' next time!
