Before We Called It the Study
A practical paint color, a night-shift schedule, and one surviving photograph from the days before House 173 had a blog.
When we bought House 173 in 1997, the smallest bedroom was just that: the small bedroom. Like much of the house, it needed some attention, and we spent those early years painting, removing wallpaper, and trying to bring things a little closer to the present day.
At the time, I was working night shifts as a nurse, which meant sleeping during the day. Not always the easiest arrangement, particularly when the sun was shining through the windows. So, sometime around 1998 or 1999, we removed the original wallpaper and painted the room dark green.
It was a practical decision. A darker room seemed like a good idea for someone trying to sleep while everyone else was awake. Of course, I also happened to like green, although I don't think I realized just how much at the time.
Looking around House 173 today, the evidence is rather overwhelming. The medium bedroom has had its share of green, the front porch is green, and even House 173 itself has adopted green as something of a signature color.
Apparently, I like green.

There aren't many photographs of the room from those early years. We didn't have digital cameras, developing film wasn't cheap, and I certainly wasn't thinking about documenting every little project. I didn't have a blog back then. In fact, the idea of House 173 as a blog hadn't even occurred to me.
Consequently, some of the earliest changes around here exist mostly in our memories, with an occasional photograph turning up to remind us of what things once looked like.

This particular picture was taken in 2004, when we were preparing to wallpaper the room again. The green paint was still there, although the walls were already being patched and prepared for their next appearance.
By then, the room was getting ready for another assignment. It would become our household office, eventually acquiring the rather grand name the study.
But that's another story.
And, as it happens, we've finally gotten around to telling it.

Coming Next: The Room We Called the Study
What started as a small bedroom eventually became our household office, acquired a rather grand name, and collected more than a few things along the way. The next installment picks up the story with the room's 2004 transformation.
