House 173 Shorts
Cyd Isn't Brooding
Cyd has been keeping an eye on House 173 since 2001.
Officially, I suppose the job is to keep away bad juju. Gargoyles... or grotesques, depending on which day you ask me, have a reputation for that sort of thing.
But bad juju doesn't come around all that often.
So mostly, Cyd watches us.
For twenty-five years, that has meant watching people come and go. Dogs wander past. Flowers bloom and disappear. Grass get too long. Projects begin with great confidence and occasionally end the same way.
Every so often, as I walk past, I'll pat Cyd on the head.
Cyd never has much to say.
These days there's moss and lichen around the eyes, and twenty-five years of weather have made a garden statue bought on a meandering drive look considerably older than House 173.
But I like to think Cyd isn't brooding.
Cyd's just watching the ordinary goings-on of an ordinary family, in an ordinary home, in an ordinary town.
And keeping an eye out for bad juju.
Just in case.
